Tangle during the Holidays

For many, holidays are something to “get through”, rather than enjoy. There are many, many reasons for this (which are individual to each person and I will not go into). So, how do we “get through”?  Here are three things I am going to do for myself to help me enjoy this season:

1. Sleep. There is no vitamin, antioxidant, probiotic, or eating pattern with more benefits than getting the proper amount of sleep. The recommended is 7-8 hours uninterrupted sleep. Keep in mind that you may need more, especially if you’re fighting off an illness. If you sacrifice your sleep, it will decrease your effectiveness and efficiency, and it will take you longer to get things done. Get enough sleep and you’ll get it done.

2. Let it go. Ask yourself, who is this for? Do they appreciate it? Are we doing this because we enjoy it, or because it’s a “tradition”? In my house, we’ve let go of some of the decorations and instituted a new tradition – family pajamas. Cost: $250 of flannel. Reaction of my 2.5 year old grandaughter: priceless.

3. Do something for yourself every day. Set aside time for yourself – sneak off with your morning coffee, or DVR that 10 pm show. Meditate (even just closing your eyes and focus on your breathing for 2 minutes). Color, do Zentangle, or art journal to release your tensions.

I’ll confess, the holidays are not my favorite time of year. Lots of history of family drama. I remind myself that I am responsible for my own happiness. I do the things that bring me joy, let go of the things that don’t matter, and look for the good. And then take a nap.
